After playing this game for months, finally getting a steel lab and a construction mod workshop built, I just learned that I can send back samples to Earth and receive tons of much needed supplies back!
Hi Eric, yes you can send back found samples to earth and this is a good idea in the early phase of the exploration. Once you have your industry up an running with factories though rather than with workshops you produce enough resources and modules so from this point on you might want to analyse the samples since doing so you can gain unique bonuses for your settlement.
One more thing: the soil samples are so random it's unbelievable. I would keep the Unusual samples, maybe the Fascinating samples as well, but send back the Sensational ones when there's 15+ kg in stock.
The time spent by your scientist is just one more resource to manage and is better spent on other activities.
Unusual samples seem to bring just as mny useful findings, and take a lot less time. Quantity also seems to be random: I settled on 25kg per batch as larger amounts didn't give more or better results.
They are really useful when expanding as you sometimes need more modules of one type in order to keep up with demands on resources (including habitats). Being able to influence shipments is also useful.
Bear in mind that the incremental improvements from the discoveries give you a continuous bonus, for example my isotope extractor is currently 66% more efficient. Wind Power 38% more.
My only bugbear with the soil samples, as I've posted before, is that they're incredibly random. I no longer send any back to Earth.
